Madrid and Catalonia, drivers of Spanish logistics

Beepaket would like to share with you the data extracted from the ‘I Report on the Logistics Competitiveness of Spain and its Autonomous Communities’ (ICLE 2023) highlights Madrid and Catalonia as the two regions in our country with a greater capacity for logistics competitiveness. This study, prepared by UNO with the support of Goodman, points to the extraordinary logistics potential due to a combination of geographical factors and first class infrastructures.

The report highlights that Spain ranks fifth among European countries where the logistics sector has a greater weight in GDP, with almost 7%, and only behind Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland and Germany. This growth is driven by various factors, such as the employment generated by the sector, the number of companies and the country's extensive infrastructure network. In addition, the reconfiguration of global supply chains and the rise of trends such as nearshoring are leading many companies to move their production closer to consumer markets.

In terms of strengths, Spain's privileged geographical location in the Mediterranean, together with major infrastructures and ports such as Barcelona, Valencia and Algeciras, as well as an extensive road network, make it a key hub for maritime and land transport. Likewise, the commitment to renewable energies and sustainability, together with competitive salaries and a high quality of life, position Spain in relation to other markets, attracting companies and workers in the sector.

The study also underlines the good labour market situation in the Spanish logistics sector, which is currently at full employment. Another important aspect is Spain's great capacity for the maritime transport of goods. With around 477 million tonnes transported per year, our country has consolidated its position as a key player in international trade routes. This strength is reinforced by Spain's strategic location, which acts as a natural bridge between Europe, Africa and America.

Among the areas of improvement that Spain needs to address in order to consolidate its position as a logistics hub of reference, the report highlights the need to modernise railway infrastructures and boost the capacity of airports for freight transport.

Madrid and Barcelona, leaders in logistics competitiveness, have an important productive fabric that serves as a lever of attraction for other companies, as well as a key geographical position that makes them the main nodes of logistics traffic. The third most competitive region in terms of logistics is Andalusia, which benefits from an extensive road network and important maritime infrastructures such as the port of Algeciras Bay, one of the most important in Spain and the most efficient in Europe according to the World Bank.

Obviously, the future prospects for the sector are unbeatable and at Beepaket we are ready to share this journey with your business thanks to our integrated software services that will allow you to control and optimise all your logistics with a single click.
